Web hosting is just the beginning At Signal, we host the web sites that we design and build, and we offer a complete set of technical services to keep our web sites running smoothly. We found years ago that the only way to deliver the highest levels of performance, and customer service, was to take full responsibility for the physical hosting, and the ongoing maintenance, of our client's web enterprises. While there are a few notable exceptions to this rule: if we design it, we usually host it, and if we host it, we almost certainly designed it. Over the years this practice has expanded into a full suite of Managed Services that we provide to our clients.

Taking responsibility Signal Managed Services encompass all aspects of internet technical services. For most of our clients we assume responsibility for everything related to their web domain including: website hosting, email hosting, site security, spam/virus filtering, traffic stats, domain hosting and DNS; most clients have us manage their domain registrations in our domain registry. Our approach is simple: we try to control and manage as much of the continuum of web presence as possible so that we can become the single contact point for problems. By taking responsibility for as large a set of variables as we can, we try to eliminate confusion and finger pointing between vendors; this is particularly useful when there is a problem.

Technical services We build our web services around solid time tested technologies that are known for their reliability and flexibility. We host all of our web sites from a Tier-1 data center in Boston, where we co-locate equipment that we own and manage. Signal employs high speed Intel web servers running Linux for fast server response, high reliability, and minimum downtime. Signal servers are connected to the internet via redundant OC-48, and OC-12 links to redundant service providers, that provide very high bandwidth, over a minimum of hops, to the internet backbone. We employ a "LAMP" based solution stack on our servers: Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP. 

Security is a full time job Signal employs the highest levels of security for customer sites, with options for encrypted secure transactions (PCI compliant), digital IDs, and password protected areas as required. All servers are protected by firewalls, and an intrusion detection system; SSL encryption is employed with all sensitive data; all credit card data is encrypted in transit and on disk for PCI compliance; service availability is monitored 24x7. Signal client servers are physically protected by armed guards using state of the art identity verification technology. 

We take email very seriously Email was the original "killer app" of the internet, and it is no less an important function today. For most people email is literally the center of their professional universe. While it is deceptively simple in principle, email is now a mission critical service. At Signal we think that if mail is going to perform such an important service, it has to work perfectly, every time. We offer our clients our extremely reliable BlueSignalz mail system; a system that most users say is the best one they have ever used. We also provide a convenient web based mail interface so our clients can check their mail from any computer. We back this up with our 'single contact' tech support, so our clients never have to struggle alone with configuration problems. To this we add industry leading spam and virus filtering on all our mail accounts; so spam is kept under close control, and hackers are kept at bay. And for bulk mailings Signal clients can take advantage of our our sophisticted Listrak list mailing and tracking services.

Edit your site content with our CMS We have long believed that content 'owners' should have the ability to edit the content on their own web sites, so we started developing our Content Management System (CMS) over a decade ago; today, the modern incarnation of our system manages content on the majority of our production web sites. The Signal CMS allows site owners to change content on their web pages using a convenient, user friendly, web based, page editor, that can be accessed from any computer. All Signal clients have the option of using the Signal CMS, which is steadily being improved and expanded to meet the evolving needs of our clients. We have now begun offering the Drupal CMS as an option for clients building new web sites with us.
